Hey, i just hopped on the RuneScape forums. Because i would like to give my compliments for the way RuneScape is addressing firewall ports.
Most modern games, use a bunch of firewall port ranges. So you have to open those port ranges in order to play those games.
RuneScape only use port 443 https and 80 http, and off course 53 for dns.
That is really nice, because you can isolate the systems you are using to play RuneScape on. From the internet service provider. With a simple router. And on that router set a strict firewall with only port 443, 80, 53 open. And leave all the rest closed.
[full disclosure]
I do not want to advertise the free software, openwrt. It is personal choice.
Using openwrt is at own risk. And i do not take responsibility for people who use openwrt.
You can build a router if you got a spare old router, with software like: openwrt
The advantages are, that you can build local area network, separated from the internet service provider. That in turn mitigates, man in the middle attacks, like a.r.p spoofing.
Because you isolate the address resolution protocol, to the l.a.n from the router you build.
Never the less, a good hygiene will be crucial, and the weakest point will be sitting between the screen and chair.
Also firmware infections, like uefi rootkits are being used in the wild it seems from certain documents.
There for always make sure you use official manufactures firmware signing and patching.
Sorry enough blah blah, back on topic:
My compliments to RuneScape, for only having the need on opening basic web surfing firewall ports. In contrast with many other online games, that require loads of firewall ports to be open.
btw... regarding the openwrt hardware firewalls -> install tcp dump package on openwrt:
Run tcp dump to inspect ALL network traffic flowing from the network interface to the WWW.
PWNED! X)
This thread should be moved to the technical section, maybe?
To be totally honest, i was suffering from local area network attacks from my religious neighbor who likes to troll with my box.
The solution was pretty simple:
I grabbed one old fritzbox 7360 sl v2 router i had laying up stairs.
I bought on new tp-link archer C6 v5 1750. - 70 euros
First thing i did was flashing openwrt on both of them.
To be honest..... now i am untouchable on the l.a.n!
