I'm sure it's old news, but I only recently came back after a few years to first try it now.

The smithing rework is a huge improvement which all artisan skills need to follow the example of.
What really makes it great to me is how much experience you can pull from making a single item, at the expense of time- instead of pumping out hundreds of finished products in order to grind, subsequently flooding the market and making them completely worthless.

If the pattern keeps up, the game's economy could become a lot less backwards, though I still have my doubts on there being a realistic flip where finished products are worth more than raw materials.

Paintchip,

The result is actually worth a lot more than the materials, especially for the higher-level items (such as masterwork). The reason for this is as you mention, it takes a certain number of ticks now to complete a piece. Masterwork takes a long time to make and subsequently costs more than the materials. Check it out sometime!
