im having a discussion with a few friends (ex soon); here is the hypothetical scenario:

Lets say all money sources/sinks in game are gone so it wouldn't either decrease or increase (lets say 5 Trillion doesn't matter so it stays 5T the whole time).

the question is:
will the buying power of gold increase with the increase of players (Y/N)?

a 5T supply that was constant would totally break the game, but buying power would increase because 5t isnt that much in reality. Players would hoard GP if it was that scarce, since it could be used to buy items off the G.E. while others without gp would have to barter or sell their items for a lower price than something was actually worth since the gp supply is low.

You're basically saying "What if we made GP discontinued", while it remains the main currency the majority of players use, and only currency that can be used on the G.E. There are probably 5T items in game that aren't gp, so items could be going for 1gp that really shouldn't be.

A finite supply of gp would never work though.

this seems fun.
Say we freeze the amount of gp to whatever the current amount is and the number of players double. Assuming all players are equal the supply and demand would both double and have no effect on buying power.
Discontinued items however have no supply but the increase in demand would cause more gp to be stuck in banks saving up for those items leaving less for non-discontinued items. Gp would in this scenario be more valuable. Also new players are probably not equal to the current players and would not be able to double the supply of high level items, increasing the demand more than the supply.

With GP fixed, it would effectively become a discontinued item. GP would, over time, no longer be used as a currency and would effectively become a commodity. Sometimes we see multiple red santas traded for a BSH, but most trades/sales are in GP/Shards.

Time and increasing players would share the same type of positive correlation in the below noted trends, so increasing player counts would just increase the trends mentioned below.

You could say that the buying power would technically go down over time because it would not be used as a currency as much anymore due to its own increasing value. It would be like spending antique coins at face value rather than selling them and using the new currency to get more value. The "antique GP" would lose its utility as a currency over time.

You could also say that the buying power would go up over time because the GP's individual value would go up. GP could be sold for more currency (whatever the new currency would be) therefore yielding more buying power. If no currency existed, GP could be bartered for more goods which would give greater buying power than a past barter for less goods. 4 goats would be worth less than 20 goats, assuming they are all equally valuable goats.
