So i got this item for free from a clan-mate back in 2013 when it had only just become a rare.
It was worth 11 mill, so it had pretty high value but nothing spectacular.
I quit a few months after.
Now during the whole covid19 situation i came back, completely forgot i had it.

I just checked the price of it and it seems this thing has skyrocketed in price the last 6 months!
Its like 61m on the ge but seems to go for more like 190m according to these forums!

Anyone knows what the hell is happening to this thing?
Like i know rares go up in price constantly, but the last 6 months it really seems to have risen much quicker all of a sudden.

In 2020, the prices of many discontinued items, SOF/TH "rares" and tokens have surged in price. Some items have multiplied more than tenfold in value.

Santa hats for example went from the 700m range to trading for over 3.2-3.4b today. The price multipled about 4.5X. Crown of Seasons has multiplied 3-4x this past year with the inflation we're seeing in the economy.

Many items, whether discontinued or "fairly limited" have risen in price. I'd say Crown of Seasons isn't an outlier, but it has gotten a lot more attention from merchants/collectors this past year due to the general trend of inflation. In the current Runescape market, it seems many folks prefer to hold on to rares, sof/th rares, tokens, gear and other rare items as a defense against the inflation. Someone who would have sold a blue partyhat for 30b in 2020 would may no longer be able to purchase it considering these have hit 70b+ levels recently. Just another example of how the power of the gold coin on Runescape has been dropping recently, increasing the demand for many of the above mentioned items.

thanks for the explanation.
Since i only returned this year and am still not as active as i once was in this game,
I wasn't aware of these things, so it was quite the shock to discover that i have an item in my bank worth double the entirety of the rest of my items combined XD (unless there more surprises in there somewhere).

I guess that ill need to decide now whether to keep it as a inflation defence system, or cash in now that i now for sure its worth a lot.

Sometimes a dump follows a pump. Hoarding is part of the explanation, not only inflation. That's true of all items. Whether an item goes up or down depends partly on whether hoarders decide to buy more, sell higher, dump, etc. There's no way to predict such a thing.

Prices are determined by the marginal items that are for sale. If sellers refuse to sell for a lower price, then a price can hold higher - and vice versa. I've had a gem sack for sale for ages. I refuse to sell for less; buyers refuse to pay more. As a result, no gem sacks are known to have traded in a long time. It might be that they never trade again.
I cannot for the life of me manage to catch Covid. Perhaps it's because I didn't get vaxxed? The travails of those lacking immunity. :(

@ Kiliandj - I'd definitely echo the above, and say you should evaluate the "opportunity cost" putting that GP elsewhere. If you're someone who likes to PVM, chances are selling and investing in the gear you need to PVM could yield a far greater return over the span of the year. Sometimes people decide to reinvest into other items that they think are undervalued, and may turn into "winners". There's definitely risk involved in both holding, or selling.

What exciting times we're witnessing in this market. :O

Does a pump generally follow a dump on an item?

It's a decent looking head cosmetic but not as great as a the beautiful holly wreath so perhaps another reason is that this item could be seen as a budget holly wreath? It hasn't been craftable for the last 3 years and pretty much no chance the squeal promo will come back in th unless they delete the separate four components.
