Er...in practical use, what are the major differences between (in terms of pickaxe, hatchet, mattock, etc.) an elder rune +5 tool and an augmented crystal tool with Honed 5 (and whatever else wanted) placed on it? Is elder rune +5 still significantly better?
for mattock and pick the fancy ones are massively better and you shouldnt even hesitate. its an exponential jump in your gathering pleasures.
for rod, hatchet, hammer your question requires a few caveats.
rod: you need both crystal and the vacuum cause not all fish can be caught with rod, but in theory the rod is faster although both allowing four perks, banner, familiar, perfect plus, legendary auras, et al... its hard to feel the difference, and especially if usin a dwarven double fish thingy. but yeah bring and use crystal rod for sailfish. thats kinda free though, so you might not even be asking about that.
hammer: crystal. there is a complicated array of things to do while smithing, but talking to other players at the falador anvils on the theme world... since you wont have anything else to do... that ought to set you straight. but yes crystal. I have to be so bold as to say don't even bother with the hammer tron.
hatchet: this is where it feels like something might change soon from an update, but only kinda sorta and not really because... perks. elder rune +5 hatchet might maybe gather wood faster, but it doesn't exist, and by the time you get to the probable required levels of 99 attack and 99 woodcutting... you would naturally be long long past the simple metrics of gathering wood fastest. yes honed, but... there are other perks like imp soul or fortunate that are more lucrative than any possible gains from simple gathering speed advantages. so... I have augmented crystal hatchet in hand for regular chores, and I have a plain crystal hatchet on my toolbelt for times I might have forgot to bring one, need to cut something during a quest, or whatever.
I have quit rsof because moderator found comments about darklight bonus damage on demons "off topic" for wildy flash mobs full of demons
Good points...not sure why I added +5 to honed. It's better base stats but your points make sense. I actually just got the Pickaxe of Earth and Song and now I'm working on the Mattock of Time and Space. Yay!
I put everything on toolbelt, but I might get another with perks, like JR said. I guess I'd do that for pickaxe and hatchet...
Perks make a significant difference. I like the honed perk actually.
I'm nearly 120 arch, researched mostly. I didn't bother getting a tony; arch is very fast on its own.
I cannot for the life of me manage to catch Covid. Perhaps it's because I didn't get vaxxed? The travails of those lacking immunity.
