This is a misconception. Most players did not lose anything when RS2 was released.
When RS2 was released in March 2004, everyone's items and stats were automatically in RS2, as it was the continuation of main game of RuneScape, and Jagex's plan was to remove the RS1 servers. However, there were enough players that preferred the old version, that Jagex reopened some of the RS1 servers, renamed to RSC, and allowed players to transfer their items back to the original version. (See RS2 Launched! )
Then, as some of those players found out that their friends were playing and enjoying RS2, they wanted to move their items back to RS2, which was allowed for a short time in April 2004. It was only those players who transferred items back to RSC, and then kept them in RSC past the deadline to transfer them once again to RS2, who lost anything.
