Hey Gielinorians,

I am super excited for Runescape being on Steam but I do have one suggestion.
We will be getting new gamers from Steam, I have no doubt about that, but if we are to grab them we NEED to have a display name clean-up before the 14th of October.
There is nothing worse and more "turning-off" to a new player then starting a game, getting a nice character design but being stuck with names like "CSaddict69" or "Sc4per4life2937".

If anyone at Runescape / Jagex sees this message please consider this.

A new player will be turned-off if he / she can't find a semi-decent name and has to be stuck with something like what I mentioned before.

I am happy with my display name and this request is obviously not selfishly suggested.

I want Runescape to grow as I have grown with Runescape for almost 15 years and this is a one in a lifetime opportunity for Runescape to grow. Let's make the best of it!

I agree but what will be the guidelines from removing an account? You never know when someone will return. People return to RS years later. Steam could even bring bad some veterans whose totally forgot RS existed. Only safe one I can think of are banned accounts that RS has NO intention of un-banning ever.

Jagex wouldn't be deleting accounts. They would simply be clearing their display names. I have multiple old accounts and most of them had their display names removed due to inactiveness in one point of the accounts history and I simply had to make a new display name once I returned.
I think this is an important step to not only attract new players but to "grab" them.

I doubt a name clean up is a easy thing to do in the next 2-3 weeks when all the staff are working from home without full access to log in and Jagex servers. Unlike years ago new players are not stuck with the same name and they can change them as many times as they want.

Most the good names belong to banned accounts and will never be released and the rest are owned by gold farming sites which they sell on to others. They can also ''grab'' the released names very quickly with automated systems long before a real person can.

A name clean up is just a Jagex con to sell bonds! If you inactive for 6 months (f2p) or 24 months if you have ever had membership and lose your name, you can't even take your old name back even when no one else has it. You HAVE to pick another name and wait 30 days to change it back or use a bond to get it back straight away.

I know it might not be easy but they could surely find a way. I hope they do because new players won't be hooked if they can't even get a name they like...

That would be a nice idea, or better yet, new accounts created on the Steam platform could have a guaranteed name if the previous owner hasn't logged in over 5 years or something. I would respect that.

Personally I would like to see them remove the 12 character limits for steam. Jagex should stop using the limited by java excuse that they have used for years. Make it 14 characters just for new steam accounts to stop current RS players hogging them. Open up name change to 14 characters to everyone after 6 months.

Passwords go to 20 characters so no reason user names can't but 14 should be ok for now. You used Sc4per4life2937 as a username but no one can have that name because it has too many characters.

Names of people who have not logged in for 5 years would already have been removed during the last clean up.

Steam is mainly for players who play short term games for a few days/weeks/months them move onto the next because they get bored quickly. RS is a long term game and I doubt steam will bring in those types of players nor will a SN have any effect on them getting hooked. Yes steam will bring in many players who give it a try but they wont stay long.
