What Runescape Remastered since 2018? We have seen Wilderness remastered big time and plenty of maps got graphically updated already.

If you are talking about "sort of RS4" Mod Keeper said is ready, it is more about game engine and infrastructure upgrades. We have learned the Game Engine team said of a 0.3s tick version coming up next year. This will be really great news for EOC among other game play. Perhaps we will see them talking about it in a few months.

We are also going to see our Avatar being "remastered" gradually, maybe starting in a few months.

The art team also mentioned the VFX system, and Mod Ryan has briefly commented (VFX, R&D) on some leaked footage of a new animation system:

As for "the day when Runescape will be like WoW, Skyrim or New World gamestyle", RS3 is actually not far away from them.

WoW's graphics aren't much better than RS3. The difference is perhaps just the animations.

Storywise, RS3 and WoW are among the longest running games with similar intensive episodic storytelling content for over a decade. I'll say RS3 actually has a definitive edge over the other games because it is a living game. We get episodic content every week and not every 3 months.

On the game play side, I'll say RS3 get the shorter end of the stick as the Tick System is really not as good comparing to WoW and the other game. At least, it is not just Legacy combat in RS3 and we closed the gap with plenty of abilities. RS3 just need a better Tick System. The new 0.3s Tick System will be a great start to make RS3 more competitive to WoW and the other games with modern ability based combat gameplay.

WOW! Thanks a lot for fully nice answer back! :D

I love Runescape as much as I love WoW and would love to see Runescape become in the level as WoW with zero tick system.

Like you said the story runescape has and all the quests it would explode and I think a lot of more new players would try out runescape!

Walking around with W A S D jumping around with SPACE, TABing to target monsters and instant shooting abilities at them would be so niiiiiice!

TBH, Runescape will never become WoW. Jagex doesn't have WoW's budget.

Eventually RS3 will be ported to UE5. and consoles. The tick system will be significantly improved, and we can fire up all the abilities while moving, jumping and backflipping with explosive VFX.

This will happen, but not all in a year or so. Jagex doesn't have the budget of WoW. They will go slower.

The tick system and EOC-ish ability based combat is just one of the many things RS3 can improve to get closer to the rank of WoW.

Most games like WoW also feature playable races and classes. RS3 uses a skill system instead of class, so they aren't going to look like WoW in this respect. However, playable race model will definitely open up a lot of eyebrows, if it comes with our Avatar Refresh.

We actually have the all those jump, leap, back flip among other abilities in RS3 already. We can see them in The Circus. We just don't see them being able to be presented as what this VFX prototype shows us because of 0.6s tick.

Imagine if we put The Circus agility actions in the 0.3s tick game engine with each EOC ability showing us one action with new explosive action VFX override, then we will have a pretty impressive EOC system much closer to the other games.

I always wondered, if they eventually plan to change to a different existing game engine, couldn't they just start the process and run an incomplete version of the game side-by-side with the existing game?

As an example, the modern game might not have any of the quests but it could run a lot of the combat and all of the surface features on the map.

The quests would be a difficult thing IMO because the tendency would be to remake a lot of it. Would the players lose interest if parts of the game they like get sent to the trash heap in transition?

They actually have an almost completed modern Runescape game developed under the new UE5 game engine. Of course, it won't have RS3 signature quests and a lot of other content and that's why it is not an MMORPG like RS3. It is a Survival Craft game.

Using the same game engine and already developed tools to make multiple new games in multiple genres are what all the B to AAA game developers are doing. Only Jagex is still lagging far behind in that arena. Of course, we know there will be new players from other genres interested in not just MMORPGs like RS3 and OSRS but also other action based genres like MOBA, FPS etc. Of course more games of more genres means Jagex can't have one or two "huge" games but RS3 is never even visble in recent year, let alone a "huge" game.

New Jagex game can only enhance the value of RS3 with unlimited cross promotion opportunites, elevate the lengthy 22 year long well established status of RS3, and make Jagex even more money, because as you mentioned new games don't have the signature MMORPG quests, progression systems, IP that RS3 has so they can't compete and cannibalize RS3.

This is how the other successful game developers sunset their legacy games with no viable content and open a new age, and welcome a new dawn on the horizon. This is their song of hope and dreams.
