Today, as a part of the game's weekly patches, Jagex decided to buff Mandrith's slayer tasks to be more on par with Laniakea in regards to awarded Slayer Points per completed task.

Most players are going to look at this change positively, because it means that Mandrith tasks are once again competitive with other Masters and the chance for getting a good item like the Deathmatch weapons out of a Wilderness Chest is now additive rather than a trade-off.

...and therein lies the problem. Wilderness Slayer was DESIGNED to be a trade-off. When the Wilderness Reborn lost it's teeth earlier this year retroactively when the new, much ballyhooed "threat system" was removed, all rationale behind having Mandrith be a competitive Slayer Master in any particular sense of the word was removed with it. You can't have needless reward without due risk, and without any players, or monsters, seeking out Slayers north of the Wilderness ditch, there simply was no risk to speak of.

I for one, hate all of this. I would rather have Pkers trying to ruin my day to earn some guaranteed goodies for my daring-do than have RNG potentially bless me for doing a slayer task I could have gotten from Laniakea or Morvran instead of Mandrith because of how negligible the difference is.

My suggestion, is to revamp Wilderness Slayer so that people who want to simply hang out in the Wilderness to get Slayer XP, points, and maybe contracts from Erskine can do so, but MOVE the Wilderness Chests to a required Demonic Skull.

Here's what this achieves.

> Players can still do their Mandrith tasks risk-free if they wish.
> Jagex can be more rewarding or creative with regards to the Wilderness Chest.
> There isn't a lack of risk for accessing the Wilderness Chest.
> Some semblance of "Hunter vs. Prey" returns to the Wilderness, without being prohibitive.

I like the update, as I like more rewards for slayer for appropriate efforts. Actually when Jagex reduced the slayer reward when they removed the Threat system, they acknowledged they could have better plan but there were other projects they would need to release first. Now that, perhaps the Jmods are done with their assigned tasks (like Unwelcome Ghosts and perhaps most part of Necromancy), so they have more time to revisit the Wildyness reward system.
