Why was this update needed? Wasn't there already a Battlepass system in the form of Yak Track? Were Jagex developers working on this just to look busy? Or did the investors want to squeeze out the last drops of milk before selling this company?

It doesn't seem like Hero Pass does anything they couldn't already do, they just removed existing systems to consolidate MTX schemes.

Jagex already told us many reasons. Hero Pass is more rewarding than Yak Track, and ALWAYS ON. Hero Pass is very flexible as we can earn points from doing everything.

The even bigger difference now is we can't buy skips in Hero Pass now, as compared to buying skips in Yak Track.

Absolutely untrue to most RS3 players after the lastest new plan with Hero Pass. Hero Pass is better than Yak Track, especially when we are also going to have Daily Challenges and the TH keys rewards back.

You also misinterpreted or misread ALWAYS-ON. It is not "nonstop". Always-on refers to the Hero Pass season and point earning opportunities, not that we the players have to be playing Hero Pass non-stop. We dictate whether we play just the last of the 3 months or everyday or anything in between.

It means there is almost no FOMO as we have 3 months to compete tasks by getting points and no worries about competing tiers. Most of us can just get pointe 365 days a year doing things our own ways without even feeling the existing of Hero Pass, and still get plentiful of rewards.

Hero Pass is so far better with the points system which we can get points doing anything. Remember with Yak Track competing 50% of a designated task and 50% of the skill and kill option won't get the tier completed? No problem with Hero Pass at all, as designated tasks give points and skill and kill our way give points. We are free to do a combination of anything to gain levels.
