Fixed a crash on loading into the game on some devices with Intel GPUs.

Fixed volumetrics sometimes not appearing first time on various GPUs.

For as long as I can remember, on multiple machines the game would crash on my first attempt to open it. Recently it has become nearly 100% of the time. With the fix today it is definitely improved. I notice the transition to loading application resources starts immediately and doesn't stop, which led to the crash.

I have no idea what volumetrics is, but the idea of it not appearing the first time fits the behavior and I did also get the same crash on an AMD device years ago. That's why I included it.

So basically anyone who is hiding in compatibility mode due to crashes on startup might want to give it another try.

My issue is actually still there, but it was nice to get a small break. :p

I was expecting it might return but hoping for the best. That's why I said in the post above it is improved and not totally fixed. As an example of why, the wilderness flash events made my screen flash out of control when it was released.

That problem was fixed, but it's still there, lurking under the surface. Occasionally it sneaks up and gets me. Also maybe related to that, my client has developed a slight twitch in the past week or so. In the top left corner 3 lines will appear, and they look like a signal strength meter. First line is tall, then shorter, then shortest.

It is a computer graphics technology to add 3D lightning effects to a scene.

It is not specific to Intel graphics. Please note the second sentence you quoted is not related to the first one. Jagex fixed 2 separate graphics issues in this patch, one was on Intel Graphics, the other one was on general 3D lighting effects rendering.

It's basically 50/50 for me now. Which is much better than 0. There must be tens of thousands of players with the same exact problem I have. The game runs great, if it can get past the loading application screen. For me a quick double tap works, as the 2nd attempt always loads. The first one errors out eventually.

It is nice to see some progress though, there is a lot of satisfaction when that loading bar actually moves. It makes it feel like the game is in a somewhat finished state.

Personally, I blame every problem with this game on telephones. And I'm probably correct. Losing Java certainly didn't help like they said it would.

Thanks for that info. It wasn't very clear and my research is weak. As to your other concern, the entire quote you included explains why it's there. I had this same exact behavior on multiple laptops, including an AMD version. All I know is something fails to load. Basically everything and it would be amazing if it actually did work all the time.

If the engine team is hot on the trail I would encourage that. I'm not really buying into this whole concept of the game being worse because of the mobile version, such as the problem with activating prayers in the prayer book.

It is fair to say improvements were made. While I do not have the problem of the game client crashing when I first open it, I have noticed an increase in the speed at which the application resources are now loading.

So basically anyone who is hiding in compatibility mode due to crashes on startup might want to give it another try.

When I read this week's newspost, I decided to test out the crash reduction claims for myself. The results were mixed.

The issues which have driven me to play in Compatibility Mode for about the past six months are a little different. My game wasn't crashing upon logging in, however there were certain places in-game where RS would immediately and completely freeze. I couldn't even log out. I had to X out the client and reopen it. I found these screen freezes could be avoided by playing in CM. Yeah, the lag sucks, but it beats total game freeze.

One place my game would freeze is halfway between the Edgeville lodestone and the clay rocks south of the barbarian village. As I moved south from the lodestone, roughly in-line with the Body Altar, everything just stopped, unless I was in CM. When I tried this in Auto Normal Mode on Monday, as I reached the spot where my game had frozen before, the run animation stalled for a second, but then I continued moving without the game freezing. The same thing happened later when I approached the trapdoor to enter Edgeville Dungeon.

However, later on I tried to teleport to Falador. This still results in total game freeze.

I sent Jagex another detailed bug report. Clearing the cache does nothing to help.

So I am back in CM.
I've been putting out fire with gasoline! ^_^

It was not a mobile problem, and I don't think and don't see anywhere Jagex claimed it was.

Volumetrics is a fairly new advanced graphics technology, more recently associated with many VR technologies. Not hard to imagine modern advanced technologies aren't backward compatable to older sw/hw technologies. This issue might be more associated with generic crashing on high draw distances and such, but not specifically on Intel vs AMD or moble vis desktop.

Whatever is happening for me, I feel like it is a symptom of some of other problem I am not aware of. Right now though the loading screen is like a fun little minigame. I cheer for the progress bar and boo when it fails.

It is definitely better than it was the previous month or more. At least the bar does move, it's not certain failure. Probably more like 60% success rate now.
