Go and open the big present by Not-So-Secret-Santa before continuing to read here! Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals. c:
There may have been a number of issues for people that may have arisen around this present - such as players naturally raising expectations beyond reason, or people hoping for something that was actually useful instead of simply nice to have. The gift in question is also something players had to be there during a certain time period to fully appreciate. However, I wanna try and sell people on why Jagex's present you had to wait for Christmas Day for is actually the most endearing thing the company has done this year.
1. When it comes to the Retro Cosmetics Jagex had brought back in the past year, the Helm of Neitiznot did not even make the Top 5. And yet, they went the extra mile to bring it back and give it the remaster treatment regardless.
2. Jagex could have sold the helm override for roughly 5 USDs within reason (comparing it to the Dragon Scimitar override) - but instead opted to give the override away for Christmas free of charge, which is not something they typically do with retro overrides.
3. Jagex could have given away Keys or Wrapping paper, which some players may have found more useful - but ultimately could have potentially net the player nothing of desire. Instead, players received a RuneScapey, non-Christmas-themed cosmetic to go with the handful of other assured cosmetic rewards already introduced.
4. Jagex could have gone big and either devalued the Black Partyhat or further devalued the Purple Santa - but used this opportunity to respect players who obtained these items on the basis of wealth preservation.
5. The Helm of Neitiznot is one of the most iconic RuneScape items out there, and this event reintroduced it to a whole new set of players who may not have had the memories associated with it for those of us old heads still playing.

Great looking out, I love this! I opened one of Big presents and got TEN THOUSAND (w00t) 10,000 Christmas Wrapping Paper. I shall now seek this epic helmet.
Merry Christmas! Have an amazing day and new year ahead!

Different people have different expectations. Why should we care about other people's expectation?
For those who have "raising expectations beyond reason" for the free RS3 Remastered Helm of Neitisnot, do they also have raising expectations beyond reason on all the other Jagex games? Last I checked we aren't getting even scum on Christmas day present in the other Jagex games such as SCUM, OSRS, Earthlocks. So what?
If I can choose a Christmas present, I will prefer a Light Sabre over a Remastered Helm of Neitisnot. Hopefully we can have a Light Sabre in RS3 later, but I will gladly take my Remasteredd Helm this year.
Others' expectations matter because RuneScape is a shared experience. It's a massive,
multiplayer
, online role playing game. Should enough people decide that they didn't really care for the big present - it will change how Jagex goes about giving out a free gift next time around - which a potential outcome being that they decide not to give out presents at all next time around.
Not only did Jagex decide to actually provide a free gift to players - but it was one of tangible value (that many players, myself included, would have willingly paid for) and could set a precedent for other Christmas goodies later on.
Using your lightsaber as an analogy, Dilbert - let's say Jagex had already released one, and then changed it later on to something that wasn't recognizable or something that offended the senses. Then they released a retro and remastered version of it that more closely resembled the original lightsaber - and instead of charging you additional money to give it to you, they just...gave it to you. Happy Christmas, Dilbert!
That's how I personally felt about the Helm of Neitiznot this year. The in-game model has additional wings and looks a bit pointed and misshapen, and the result was that even though it was more graphically appealing, it wasn't the helm of Neitiznot anymore. Then they announced they were going to remaster the older version of the helmet and I was ready to spend - only to be surprised that Jagex would just give me the helm!
As a result, I was able to use a Steam card someone had gifted me to purchase another cosmetic that I may not have considered getting - the Gilded Armor remaster - and complete my collection of "remastered" legacy cosmetics, instead of waiting on whatever price the Helm might have been.
---
Cosmetics are just eye-candy, and they don't provide functional value. It's understandable to me that one may have felt underwhelmed after a month of hype being built up. But it's a genuine gift, and I'm grateful.
