The RuneScape account system we've been using is quite old now, and while its had its fixes and improvements over the years, its also had its flaws. RuneScape accounts haven't had case sensitive passwords for over 20 years, and there have been numerous complaints about the operation of the recovery system having a human judgement aspect to it (if someone has enough information about you, they could potentially try and impersonate you and get your account).

Its now been been bandaided so many times that its reached its end-of-life period, for the system to be retired and be replaced with a more modern, industry standard security solution.

Jagex accounts are the replacement - they offer a number of security and usability enhancements over the original system. They combine all of your RuneScape characters under a single account login, provide more secure credentials, and secure that single point of entry better.

After migration your login moves to an email, password, and 'second factor' - that second factor is either a verification code sent to your email, or a code from your authenticator app. You'll also need to use the Jagex Launcher to log in after migration, but once you've logged into the Jagex Launcher once, you shouldn't really need to enter your account information into it again unless you don't play for awhile.

"Linking" an account is adding a RuneScape character to a Jagex Account. Your Jagex Account can hold 20 RuneScape characters in it. Once you add a RuneScape character to a Jagex Account, the account is permanently accessible via your Jagex Account and the old credentials used to log in are invalidated. If your information is out there on the internet through old database leaks, this is pretty much a 'fresh start' where none of that old information can be used to gain access to your characters.

There shouldn't be any issues with both accounts having the same registered email.

Very much appreciated.

But

Im having trouble logging in now. I've tried my "old" pw and the new one I had to make when I established a new account and authenticator linked to my email. I was able to log in to forum via rune wiki and I did have to use th new email/authenticator.
But when i try to log into th game (StrawburyCat) it doesnt work! Did I mention I used both pw?

What am I doing wrong? I feel like Im missing something

Update: I reloaded my RS acct; still doesnt work :( ( Am I supposed to do it thru gmail now?

If you're trying to log in directly through the game client, that won't work anymore. Jagex Accounts are required to use the Jagex Launcher to play.

The Jagex Launcher can be downloaded here if you don't have it on your system:
https://www.jagex.com/en-GB/launcher

You should be able to log into your Jagex Account and all characters that you have imported onto that Jagex Account will be listed for play. Pick the game you want to play and the character you want to play with, click the "Play" button and the game should launch and sign you in.

If you already had the Jagex Launcher and were using it previously, be sure to log all accounts out of the launcher, and then log in with your new Jagex Account information (the same thing you used to log into the forums).

No problem, glad you got it all working.

No need to uninstall the old game client - the Jagex Launcher is actually still using it, it just provides a different way to login.

what happened to linking to steam?
that was a big waste of time too
was never hacked until less then 1 week from using steam for the first time
good thing I had my BANK PIN
which is also why I started using the authenticator
they should have no business trying to understand what our passwords are or how we have them set up
who cares if it wasn't cap sensitive the new password they had me make didn't care about caps numbers or characters only length

@Applejuiceaj do you know if I remove /disable account for the Jagex Launcher. Would I lose my Runescape account? The Jagex Launcher is the most annoying thing ever! I miss logging in with username and password. Now I have to log in with email and a new password and also do an email verification code. I can't even disable that. Very annoying. I wonder if I disable the Jagex account if I will be able to log in back to account using my old username and password on the Runescape Launcher.

A Mad Toy - By doing that, you would lose access to your RuneScape accounts, yes.

The RuneScape account to Jagex Account migration is a 1 way process. There isn't a way to go back. While it is an optional opt-in thing right now, in the future it will become mandatory for all players in order to continue to play RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and other Jagex titles that are released.

A few points though:

- Unless you are using a shared or public computer, you should be able to leave the Jagex Launcher signed in. In doing this, it will remember your info and not require you to enter your email, password, and verification code each time you open it.

- Being required to enter a verification code at each full login is expected - Jagex accounts have mandatory MFA. By entering this, you are proving that the person that is logging in is you, not someone else.

- There were some issues right around the time you made your posts here (and on your other thread) that are not normal. Under normal conditions, you click to open the launcher, it pops up, you pick your character and click Play, and that's it. It should be more convenient than the old way of opening the client and needing to enter your details manually. Some of your negative experiences may be due to that.

Give it a few days, see if your experiences improve now that you've gotten things set up and get used to how it works. After that, if you have feedback on how things can be improved, you can send them to the appropriate team via the following feedback survey link:

(This link is also found on the Jagex Launcher download page, if you would prefer to follow it from there)
