Im trying to afk necromancy and my dude attacks 1 monster than gets piled by 3 but he just sits there i think my auto retaliate is on, im playing on the auto ability mode. not in NIS settings Am i missing something?

Is your "dude" your familiar? If so, there are 4 Familiar Combat Modes:

Default, Attack the same target (that you are attacking), Reactive (attack in self defense only), Passive (do nothing).

If your dude is your familiar, check which mode it is on.

Check the icon on your Action Bar. two swords means that auto-retaliate is on. One sword means it is off.

For some reason I'm imagining Batman getting piled on by 3 like in a movie and doing nothing because he's asking himself if his auto retaliate is on.

Also some abilities target more than one monster. I think it's the one with the scythe.

I think it's a glitch. I have this happen occasionally both with legacy and EOC

Auto retaliate was on with me on my hardcore ironman I was afk'ing with necro but somehow he just got banged, i noticed when I died, hope they fix this, so others don't encounter this, 80necro with 75 defence on ice gaints so i was comfortable with it because I did it a few times allready, gues all good things come to an end
