i am currently in a clan and we would like to change the name. the name we want is of the previous very respected clan owner who passed to cancer. the name we want does not show up at all in the clan logs/high scores and what not but when we attempt to change it, it still appears unavailable.

Not all clan names will show on the clan logs, eg if they have under 5 members. Try joining the clan as a guest and see if it allows you too. This will indicate if the clan name is taken or not.
